Building Community 2

I am doing an art project that I would like your help on.

Each week I will be asking a question. Please feel free to answer questions from past weeks.

Week 1 (10/3/07) What Does Home Mean to You?
Week 2 (10/7/07)
What Does Community Mean to You?
Week 3 (10/16/07) What's Your Favorite Neighborhood Memory?
Week 4 (10/22/07) What do you Look for in a Community?
Week 5 (10/31/07) What do you become Homesick for?

Your answer can be a few words, a sentence, a story, a drawing, or a doodle. Your submission will be included into a large installation piece, unless it is deemed offensive and counter productive. Send submissions to leaves.graduallygreen@gmail.com. Please bookmark this page and check back each week for updates.

Please specify which question you are answering, and please no copyrighted material. If you would like your name to be listed among the contributors, please also let me know how you would like your name to look.

Thank you for your assistance,

Lauren Jacobs

Building Community 2: Process and Project

This is an interactive project, so the first step is getting the word out. I've used a few web sites (this one, myspace, livejournal, facebook) and e-mail communities that I'm a member of, but I need as many responses as possible.

So I go out and gather fallen autumn leaves. I hand write my questions and web address on them in biofriendly, non-toxic ink. I use no other methods of preserving them, other than keeping them in a cookie tin.

I soak them in water to make them supple, and so that they'll stick to surfaces (like when it rains in the fall and your car is covered in leaves)

They are left on the windshields of cars parked on the street, in parking lots and garages, and also on parking meters, on the walls of covered walkways, and on office windows and doors.

These leaves will decay no differently then all the other leaves of the season.

Here's where you come in. You find a leaf, or read an e-mail, or what have you, and then you send me a response to the question at leaves.graduallygreen@gmail.com

I transcribe your answer onto small pieces of thin, 100 percent recycled paper.

I shape each piece of paper with your answer into a kind of vessel, or curled leaf.

I stich it together with other answers, like a double-sided honeycomb.

I take these "quilts" and make them into spaces, that can be gone into and interacted with.

People can still look into your vessel and read what you wrote.
